Look before you color
Temporarily imagine the character as one solid shape. Ears, tail, quills and clothing edges should still create an outline you can recognize.
Choose one main hook
Long rabbit ears, a fox tail or a swept quill shape can carry the design. Let the remaining details support that hook instead of competing with it.
Check avatar size
A large preview can hide clutter. View the exported PNG as a small thumbnail and decide which shapes remain visible.
